What does the ALICE project do with the money it receives?
Last year’s donations were used for:
clinical research:
€ 5,000 to finance emergency genetic testing;
€ 5,000 to establish an HUS register in Lombardy with the aim of identifying possible carriers and patients at risk
€3,000 to create electronic hospital records for patients treated in the Paediatric Nephrology Unit of the De Marchi Clinic from 2000 to date (around 100 cases).
scientific research:
€12,000 to buy laboratory machinery for DNA analysis at the Clinical Research Centre of the Mario Negri Institute at Ranica (near Bergamo).
nursing:
to fund a round-the-clock nursing telephone call service for peritoneal dialysis patients.
scientific conferences:
to help doctors take part in medical conferences.
What is the HUS Centre (Centro per la SEU)?
The HUS Centre is an ambitious project which is underway at an estimated annual cost of €90,000 to enable the provision of two important services for the benefit of patients affected by HUS and their families: to provide free accommodation for parents of patients who need to be admitted to the Centre for treatment, tests or any other HUS-related reason; and to provide psychological support for patients and carers during the acute phase of the disease and where necessary in later stages.
