What is the ALICE Project?

Alice Chiandotto was born on 18th March 2002. A few months after her birth, she was taken to hospital suffering from fever, vomiting and debilitation. After a series of tests she was diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. Despite a series of transfusions, she was to undergo renal failure, and as a result she needs daily dialysis treatment, until a compatible kidney transplant is available. A transplant took place in 2006 but proved unsuccessful, forcing the little girl to be kept on dialysis. This is still the only way of keeping her alive until researchers find a real cure for this rare disease.

Progetto Alice, the Alice Project, is a charitable association founded by Paolo Chiandotto, Alice’s father. The aims are to promote understanding of the causes and symptoms of HUS and to find a cure; the charity will also provide health care and welfare for people afflicted by HUS and to give financial support to scientific, clinical and experimental research projects set up to study the pathology.
